Quick Tips
- GPS, Maps, or a compass are highly recommended
- Don't spend any time trying to find bears off the mountain
- Be sure to call and check with the Wyoming Game and Fish office to ensure the hunt area is still open
On The Ground
This unit is located on the western side of the state, north of La Barge, on the eastern side of the Wyoming rang and the famous Greys River. The area consists of oilfield prairies in the lower elevations, giving way to picturesque mountain ranges.
This unit is has one of the highest numbers of total black bears harvested each year.
Terrain
Like most of Wyoming, this unit offers a little bit of everything. There are ranch and farm lands along the rivers, oil fields and prairies in the lower elevations, and steep rugged mountains up high. The mountain range is on the western side of this unit. The further east you travel towards Big Piney and Marbleton, the more you will run into rolling prairies. The mountains in this unit have steep timber covered ridges. Once above timberline, you are going to find what you would typically think of in an alpine environment -big basins with bald rocky mountain peaks.
Roughly 980 square miles
75.2% public land
Elevations range from 5,500-12,000 feet
Vegetation
Lower elevations are covered in sagebrush and mountains are covered in timber in this unit. In the mountains, the majority of the trees you will find are lodgepole pines. The higher you get in elevation in this unit, the more alpine vegetation you will see.
Access
Access to where you will find black bears is not an issue in this unit. There are multiple maintained roads out of Big Piney in the northern portion of this unit as well, and roads out of La Barge in the southern portion. Forest Service Road 46 runs north through the National Forest from Big Piney. There are many other roads and trails leading off of that road. La Barge Creek and Beaver Creek Road near La Barge offer excellent access to the southern portion of this unit. One plus side to this unit is there are no Wilderness Areas, so if it’s public land, nonresidents can hunt it. Even with all the roads, there are still opportunities for a backcountry hunt.
Maps, GPS, and a compass should be used by anyone
No Wilderness Areas in this unit
Camping and Lodging
There are three towns in this unit that have accommodations and provisions. In the northern section, you have Big Piney and Marbleton, and La Barge in the southern section. Like most Wyoming towns, these are not big towns, so bringing the majority of the supplies needed for a hunt would be best. There is only one established campground in this unit, but there are about six trailheads that you could set up a base camp out of.
Very limited number of established campsites
Three small towns with limited support in them
