Huckleberry Range runs north to south in the middle of the unit, and contains three small tracts of state land. Dunn Mountain is located in the very middle of the unit. Colville Valley and Pleasant Valley border east and west sides respectfully. As most of Huckleberry is private land, you will need to do your homework and carry a GPS if you are a DIY public land hunter. Here and there, you will also find small BLM or state sections with decent access.
Plat maps will be helpful in identifying land ownership and asking for permission to hunt.
This unit has seen its fair share of logging, ranching and farming. Multiple fires have burned the last several seasons. Agriculture fields along the valleys attract whitetail.
The fire season of 2015 saw the Carpenter Road fire, a large burn on Huckleberry Mountain in the southern portion of the unit. Most of the unit is mild, broken land with scattered trees, bushy valleys and benches that have been cleared and left as grass for grazing livestock and hay meadows. Whitetail live in these fringe areas and are common in the fields after dark. There are also smaller conifer forests and past logged areas in various stages of regrowth in this unit.
This unit has small tracts of state and BLM land, as well as some private land. There are decent access roads to a majority of the public land.
There are campgrounds located along Lake Roosevelt. Primitive camping in the National Forest is allowed during most of the year, but various fire bans and forest road closures may be in effect, so double check any restrictions or permits necessary prior to your trip. If you are more interested in a bed and a shower, as well as staying closer to gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store, your best option will be local B&B’s in the towns of, Kettle Falls, Chewelah and Colville. The southeast corner of the unit is approximately 30 miles from Spokane in a straight line.
