This unit is found in north east Utah and lies on the Wyoming border. Hunters will find a large amount of huntable public land here with good elk numbers. A portion of the High Uinta Wilderness is found here and makes for some excellent backpack hunting opportunities. With the early dates of this hunt most of the areas elk will be in some of the high elevation areas which can be tough for some hunters to physically access.
Good elk numbers can be found here but hunters will likely need to pack in a few miles to locate huntable herds.
This area is comprised of a series of ridges that run north from the High Uinta Wilderness and drop steadily towards the Wyoming border. The high country areas feature large flat and mostly timbered basins with very steep knife ridge’s of shale rock and cliff bands. Cross country travel from basin to basin can be tough and even dangerous at times. From the high basins long ridgelines extended down into the low country along the border. Many finger ridges branch off the main ridge lines making for excellent habitat. The low country to the north is more mild with rolling hills and wide ridge lines.
The higher elevations areas throughout this unit will see a heavy presence of pine, lodgepole, and fir. These trees will grow in large mature stands which can severely cut down on visibility and mobility. The mid elevation areas will see much of the same but large meadows of sage and grass will periodically disperse the tree cover. This trend will continue into most of the low country areas but tree cover with disperse slightly.
This area is almost entirely public and a large portion of the southern half being comprised of the roadless High Uinta Wilderness. Hunters who are willing to hike for it will find little trouble in distancing themselves from the crowds but physical conditioning will be important. Road systems cover the northern half of the unit fairly well with an extensive trail system being found to the south.
There are no modern lodging options found in this unit and hunters will either need to RV or truck camp. Groceries and sporting goods will need to be purchased prior to the hunt beginning.
