On The Ground

This unit is found in central Utah and is just southeast of the town of Spanish Fork. Hunters will find a bunch of public land available to hunt as well as good populations of elk. The country here can be extremely rugged and physical conditioning will be important.

The hunting conditions can be tough due to terrain but hunters willing to work for it should be in for a good hunt.

Terrain

This area is very mountainous with large and steep ridge lines, deep valleys, and areas to get away from pressure. There are some lower foothill areas on the northwest corner of the unit though most of these areas are private. Throughout the remainder of the unit hunters will be looking at steep climbs into most of the hunting areas.

  • Roughly 978 square miles

  • 45% public land

  • Elevations range from 5,400- 8,600 feet

This area features a fairly typical vegetation makeup of pinyon juniper and sage in the lower lying areas as well as south slopes and pine and fir in dense stands on all north facing slopes. Oak brush can be found throughout the entirety of the unit and can make cross country travel difficult and frustrating at times.

Hunters will find great public access here thanks to miles of public land. There are several roadless areas for those willing to hike but access into these areas can be physically demanding. A good road system is found here though most of these fall in creek bottoms leaving hunters with hiking up as their only option. Trails can be found spread throughout the area making access into backcountry areas easier.

  • Main roads of access will include Highway 89, Highway 6, Skyline Dr, and Lake Fork Rd

There is one small option for modern lodging found in Fairview though far more options can be found just outside of the unit in Spanish Fork . Groceries and a few select sporting goods can be found in Fairview though most needs will need to be met prior to he hunt.

  • There are some modern lodging options found in Fairview with more options available in nearby Spanish Fork

  • Groceries and some sporting goods can be found in Fairview but specialty gear needs will need to be met prior to leaving for the hunt.
