This unit is found in central Utah and lies just west of the towns of Ferron and Castle Dale. This area is comprised almost entirely of public lands and hunters will find no shortage of opportunity here. A huge road network makes escaping crowds tough but not impossible.
Tons of public access options and good elk numbers makes for a great hunt for nearly everyone. Escaping pressure can be tough but is still doable.
This area is a unique mixture of terrain types with gentle rolling hills, deep coulees, rock cliffs, and huge plateaus. In the lower elevations vegetation cover is fairly light and glassing opportunities. This light ground will continue for most of the unit with trees found in high density on north and east facing slopes. Cross country travel can be moderately difficult due to the constant change of elevation due to the broken terrain.
Most of the lower-lying areas including creek bottoms will be comprised of large sage flats dotted with pinyon-juniper. Vegetation cover will be very sparse here with trees really only popping up in small bunches on north-facing slopes. The mid-elevation areas will be a higher presence of pines, some aspens, and oak brush. Cover will be much denser in areas at this elevation belt although plenty of glassing opportunities still exist. The highest elevations will be an even mix of large sage-covered plateaus and rocky ridges and bluffs.
A healthy road and trail system provides excellent access into this unit. Additionally, nearly all of the hunting area is comprised of public lands. Roads will lead hunters to nearly every major drainage and trails will lead through most of the roadless areas. ATV’s can make traveling much easier and quicker as rough roads are commonly encountered here.
There are no modern lodging options found in or near the unit. Hunters will either need to primitive camp, RV camp, or travel to the unit from a close town. The closest modern lodging is found in Ephraim which is about an hour from the unit. Groceries and sporting goods can be found in small moderation here and hunters will want to fill these needs prior to the hunt.
