This unit is found in northeast Utah and along the Colorado border. Good elk numbers can be found here and hunters who are willing to work for it can have a very enjoyable hunt. A large portion of the western edge of the unit is private but hunters will still find plenty of public lands to hunt.
Good elk hunting can be found here throughout all of the seasons and hunters willing to put in the work can be in for a great hunt.
Different types of terrain between the three different areas of the unit. South from Rim Road and steep on the initial drop. Terrain on the southern end is easy-to-moderate with small ridges and washes heading toward the bottom. Central area of the unit is flat with some rolling hills. Elevations are not extreme, but the northern section has long ridges running north/south off the Green River that are relatively steep.
The south end of unit is mostly pinyon and junipers between the Rim Road and Dinosaur National Monument. The central region of this area is covered in prairie grass and crops on private land, and the northern end is a mixture of Douglas fir and lodgepole pine on the ridges and north facing slopes. The sides and south facing slopes mainly consist of Wyoming big sage and black sage and some aspen. More water can be found on the northern end from man made water tanks and natural water supplies.
Diamond Mountain Highway off of Sunshine Bench Road out of Vernal is the easiest access point. Limestone Road from Highway 191 out of Vernal is another option. With GPS and quality maps, a hunter can navigate his way around much of the private land, accessing public land. During periods of snow and rain, the roads can become very muddy and almost impassable. Tires chains or ATVs recommended.
There are no modern lodging options found within the unit but hunters can find plenty of choices in Vernal about 45 minutes outside of the unit. Many hunters opt to use an RV or truck camp. Groceries and sporting goods cannot be purchased within the unit but several options can be found in Vernal.
