This small unit is found in south central Utah and shares a border with the Capitol Reef National Park. During periods of good snow this area can be good for elk but it can be tough during dry years. With the long season dates hunters will have some flexibility when choosing their hunt dates and with enough effort should stand a good chance at filling at tag.
During periods of good snow this area can be excellent for elk. Dry years can be a little tougher but still doable with determination and hard work.
This unit is mostly comprised of an area commonly referred to as “the Flats”. Here the terrain is fairly level without much elevation change. The western and northern edges of the unit are made up of steep ridges and deep drawers that sit several hundred feet above the Flats. Here hunters will find a lot more terrain to hide elk which can be great areas to focus on during periods of heavy pressure. The western side of the unit contains a portion of the Steep Creek Wilderness study area and will be roadless. Traversing this country can be tough but is a common area where elk are spotted.
This area is predominately high desert and features large expanses of sand, sage, and pinyon juniper. The rougher areas around the edges of the unit will see large rock cliffs on the edges of creek drainages.
This area is almost entirely public land and hunters will have plenty of opportunity for finding hunting areas. Because this unit is priamily roadless physically accessing some areas can be tough especially during periods of heavy snow. Most areas will only be accessible by foot, bicycle, or livestock and hunters need to take this into consideration when planning their hunt.
There are no modern options found within the unit but a few options can be found outside of the hunting area in Boulder and Escalante. Sporting goods and groceries will need to be purchased prior to the hunt beginning.
