On The Ground

Hunters may buy over-the-counter bull elk tags to hunt in this unit, which borders the west side of the Pahvant trophy elk area.

Some big bulls survived for several years after this unit was switched from part of a limited-entry trophy elk unit to an open-bull unit where hunters could use over-the-counter tags. Now it's rare to find a 5x5 or bigger bull except on some of the large private tracts.

Terrain

Volcanic ridges, the low Canyon Mountains, part of the Sevier Desert, the west side of Pahvant Valley, and some desert hills comprise this unit. The Canyon Mountains rise abruptly from Sevier Valley on the west and Scipio Valley on the east. The higher parts are steep and rugged, featuring many large rock cliffs and several peaks varying from about 8,500 to more than 9,700 feet above sea level. The valleys on the sides of the Canyon range are 4,800 to 5,500 feet in elevation and drop to 4,600 feet farther south. There are many fields along Interstate 15. West of Fillmore are thousands of acres of exposed lava fields known as the Cinders and Tabernacle Hill.

  • Roughly 1,478 square miles

  • 67% public land

  • Elevations from 4,600-9,700 feet

A lot of this unit was burned severely a decade ago, leaving much of it treeless and brushless. Grass and forbs have grown in, but there is little cover for elk, especially in the southern half. The northern half has firs, pines, junipers, and oak brush in the mountains. Junipers and oak brush grow thickly on some ridges and foothills, especially on eastern and northern slopes. The large, grassy pastures surrounded by junipers provide feed for elk. Alfalfa and hayfields attract elk, especially at night.

Gravel and dirt roads provide access to most of the unit. Parts of the Canyon Mountains are roadless because they’re so steep and rugged that roads could not be built even before the Forest Service began limiting road construction. A few roads that provide access are the black rock road on the south end of the unit and several other roads between Kanosh and Holden.

  • ATVs are limited to designated routes

Hunters may camp almost anywhere on public land. At least three campgrounds are in the Canyon Mountains on the west side. They are in the Fillmore Ranger District of the Fishlake National Forest. Check for fire restrictions before hunting. Do not camp within 200 feet of a water hole or windmill. Some places to lodge include Paradise Inn & Resort in Fillmore and Budget Motel in Delta. Both the Wagons West RV Park & Campground and KOA campground are in Fillmore.
