On The Ground

Located along the eastern side of the Colorado River and south of Lake Powell this unit offers some incredible backdrops to pursue Desert Bighorn Sheep. Most of the western half of the unit is Comprised of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, which is open to hunting, and remains largely roadless. Hunters should be in good physcial conditionfor this hunt.

This unit has typical sheep hunting which consists of chasing a few animals in a huge area. Get the best glass you can afford and stay behind it. Covering lots of country on foot will be necessary.

Terrain

Located in the eastern half of the state, this unit is relatively flat. The landscape is carved up with steep rocky canyons that twist and wind through the ridges and mountains. The tops of the mountains are flat and lead to the valley floor. There are large canyons that run along the San Juan River and its tributaries.

  • Roughly 745 square miles

  • 98% public land

  • Elevations from 3,700-6,200 feet

The lower elevations consist of dry, desert rolling hills and flats. Some different grasses, prickly pear cactus, yucca, and sagebrush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees. Vegetation does not change much in the higher elevations of the unit, with the exception of pinyons and juniper trees growing thicker.

There is great public access to this unit. However, with a lack of maintained roads, some areas can be difficult to reach. There are a few maintained gravel roads that lead to four-wheel-drive or ATV roads. There are not many trails, and foot travel will be cross country and difficult in some areas. Cliff bands can limit access to areas as well.

  • ATV recommended

  • Four-wheel drive recommended

Most hunters camp along roads. There are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. Many of the locations are in small coves with shelter from the wind. Halls Crossing on the northwestern tip of the unit offers lodging, groceries, and other services.
