On The Ground
Located east of the Green River in the red rock canyon country that Utah is famous for, this area gives hunters a chance to pursue mature desert bighorn sheep. This can be a very challenging unit so hunters should be in excellent shape prior to the hunt. With only two permits per year, it is a hunt of a lifetime.
Terrain
Located in the eastern half of the state, this unit is relatively flat. The landscape is carved up with steep rocky canyons that cut through the ridges and mountains. The majority of the sheep in the unit are located along the cliff bands of the Colorado and Green Rivers. This terrain can be difficult to travel through.
Roughly 1,462 square miles
97% public land
Elevations from 4,200-6,300 feet
Vegetation
Lower elevations in this unit have dry, desert rolling hills and flats. Some different grasses, prickly-pear cactus, yucca and sagebrush with scattered pinyon pines and juniper trees can also be found here, and in higher elevations.
Access
With the majority of the unit land controlled by the BLM there is great public access. However, with a lack of maintained roads, some areas can be difficult to get into. There are a few maintained gravel roads that lead to four-wheel-drive or ATV roads. There are not many trails, so traveling on foot will be difficult in some areas. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are within the unit boundary and don’t allow hunting.
ATVs recommended
Four-wheel drive recommended
Camping and Lodging
Most hunters camp along roads, there are several locations that have good, flat camping locations for travel trailers or tents. There are a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. Green River and Moab offer lodging and services.
