Quick Tips
- Scout and learn the unit, it is big country
- Have a detailed map that shows road access and property boundaries
- Many of the lakes and reservoirs offer good fishing
On The Ground
This large unit is located in the northern part of the state and has good public access. Bears can be located throughout the entire unit.
In the spring, the bear’s diet generally consists of grass, and forbs, and they will be relatively close to water sources. Most bear movement will take place during the early morning and evening hours. Their movement will continue to increase as hunts progress. The black bears’ mating season will reach its peak around the month of June. Expect bears to be covering ground and looking for opportunistic meals. Their diet will transition from grasses to more substantial foods such as acorns, pine nuts, and berries.
Terrain
On top of the Wasatch mountain range are large meadows and flats with steep creek drainages leading down to the valley floor. Just up from the valley floor are rolling foothills. With a variety of terrain in the unit, there are a lot of areas for game to hide where they may not get pressured.
Vegetation
The low elevations in this unit have dry rolling hills and flats, with grass, prickly-pear cactus, sagebrush, and scattered pinyons and junipers. Sagebrush continues into the middle elevations, which are also covered in ponderosa pines and oakbrush. The higher elevations have scattered aspen groves and steep slopes covered in conifer forests.
Access
A majority of the unit is part of one of three national forests, providing great public access. There is road access on all sides of the unit, with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained four-wheel-drive roads or ATV trails. There are some large private pieces of property, along with the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, which limits access. Four wilderness areas, Mount Olympus, Twin Peaks, Lone Peak, and Mount Timpanogos, will only allow foot or horse traffic.

Camping and Lodging
Most hunters camp along roads. Several locations have good, flat camping grounds for travel trailers or tents. There are also a couple of designated campgrounds open to the public. There are a few towns and cities spread throughout the unit that offer lodging depending on what part of the unit you hunt.
