This unit is located west of Fairview and east of Nephi. Interstate 15 is the western unit boundary, with Highway 89 acting as the eastern boundary.
In the spring, the bear’s diet generally consists of grass, and forbs, and they will be relatively close to water sources. Most bear movement will take place during the early morning and evening hours. Their movement will continue to increase as hunts progress. The black bears’ mating season will reach its peak around the month of June. Expect bears to be covering ground and looking for opportunistic meals. Their diet will transition from grasses to more substantial foods such as acorns, pine nuts, and berries.
Low elevations in this unit have a lot of private property, and much of the high-elevation elk habitat is public land. Most of the high elevation canyons are very steep with north-facing pine slopes. Rolling foothills with pinyon/juniper, scrub oak, and sagebrush are located in the low elevations of this unit. A majority of the lower elevations are private farmland with a lot of alfalfa fields. Some hunters can gain access to the private land by asking the landowner for permission and paying a small trespass fee.
High elevations contain ponderosa pine, scrub oak and some aspen mixed with alpine tundra. Mid-elevations have scrub oak, grass meadows, sagebrush, ponderosa pine and some aspen. Pinyon/juniper, sagebrush, oak brush, grasses and other browse grow in lower elevations. Springs, small lakes and perennial streams can be found in higher elevations. Lower elevations have some small streams, stock ponds and springs.
The Nebo Loop runs through higher elevations on the north end of the unit; there are multiple trails and glassing points on this road. Some of these trails will give hunters access to the remote and steeper areas of the unit. There are also multiple pull outs that hunters can use on the Nebo Loop Road giving hunters access to some of the more remote and steep parts of the unit. South of State Route 132, hunters have good ATV and trail access to Salt Creek Peak and the Horse Heaven Mountain area. There are a lot of two-track ATV trails and hiking trails in the mountains at the south end of the unit, as well as plenty of public land.
Payson, Fairview, Manti, Nephi, and Mt. Pleasant have lodging, gas, groceries, and other supplies. Camping is permitted on most public land along with a campground near the Nebo Loop.
