Few hunters outside the Beaver State think of it as a destination for hunting whitetail deer but there are more than 7,000 Columbian whitetail deer. Columbian whitetails are asmaller race, which are hunted in Jackson County and protected elsewhere. Columbia whitetails have built from an estimate of about 2,500 in the early ‘80s to more than 7,000today. Hunting is allowed in the Umpqua River area in Douglas County (Melrose Unit and parts of the Indigo, Dixon and Tioga units). Tags are highly sought in the annual computerlottery, but some transferable vouchers are issued to landowners, who charge hunters who want to collect a specimen. Few Columbia bucks exceed 110” with exceptional specimensmeasuring 120” or more.
