On The Ground
One of the few places where hunters can travel by boat to scout or hunt for mule deer and desert bighorn sheep, this unit includes much the Black Mountains next to Lake Mead and runs north through Mormon Mesa.
Hunters often see several rams. Most sheep live on or near Cathedral Peaks, Pinto Ridge and Razorback Ridge. Physically demanding spot-and-stalk hunting
Terrain
Mostly rugged, steep mountain ranges and softly rolling desert hills at their bases. Sheer cliff faces are on Cathedral Peaks. Hikers should expect unstable footing on broken granite.
Roughly 378 square miles
80.3% public land
Elevations from 1,150 feet at Lake Mead to about 3,400 feet
Vegetation
Cactus and creosote brush and white bursage grow at lower elevations. Mahogany woodlands take over as elevation increases.
Access
Hunter access is fair. No roads lead into some hunting grounds. Boating is sometimes a good option to reach hunting sites.
Some areas have motor vehicle restrictions
Use maps to see which roads are affected
Few well-groomed county and powerline roads
Camping and Lodging
Las Vegas and Henderson along with Lake Las Vegas Resort are close to hunting grounds. Commutes to and from hunting units can get long and drain energy.
Most hunters prefer camping
Camping is allowed on almost all public grounds
Motorized equipment (even a chainsaw) is restricted in much of the unit
