On The Ground
Located in north central Montana within the Little Rockies Mountains, this hunt district provides some unique terrain for hunting sheep. This district borders the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation and provides good public access to the Little Rockies Mountains. It is in a remote area of Montana and gives a hunter a great opportunity to get away, with only one tag allotted there will be no competition from other sheep hunters.
This district typically does not have the quality of rams that are found in some of the other districts in the Missouri River Breaks. This is a small area with a sheep herd that moves between the Fort Belknap Indian reservation and the public land within the Little Rockies.
Terrain
The Little Rockies Mountains are heavily timbered with vertical slopes and very steep in most areas. The area transitions to lower rolling hills and sagebrush flats once out of the mountains, but most of the sheep hunting will be within the mountains. Hunting can be challenging and the terrain is more rugged than other hunt districts within the Missouri River Breaks. The heavy timber makes spotting difficult.
Roughly 51 square miles
51.1% public land
Elevations from 3,150-5,750 feet
Vegetation
The district is heavily timbered in areas, with some rock cliff faces and areas of scattered open timber stands. The vegetation is mainly Ponderosa pine, Juniper and Douglas fir on north and east slopes and in many of the draws. The ridges along with south and west slopes consist of sagebrush and grass and are usually fairly open.
Access
This area has good public access with the majority of the Little Rockies being BLM land. Roads can be limited, but they do access the district. The sheep densities are highest within the mountain range, and very seldom found in the flats and lower elevations.
A GPS with land ownership is recommended, to avoid the private land and the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation
Camping and Lodging
The nearest town is Malta. It is a small ranching and agriculture town with some lodging options along with a grocery store and restaurants. The community of Zortman is within the unit, and has limited accommodations but does provide fuel and a restaurant. Camping is allowed on most public land and there are dispersed, and established campgrounds within the unit.
