This hunt district lies east of Montana Route 83 above Seeley Lake and is almost entirely within the Flathead National Forest and the Bob Marshall Wilderness, providing hundreds of square miles of backcountry hunting opportunities.
Billies range from 8-9", with a 10" mountain goat being an exception. Mature nannies have horns from 7-8.5" and are quite thinner than the billies. Longest and heaviest coats are harvested late in the season, but you may not be able to reach a trophy in the mountains due to snow blocking trails.
The Flathead River flows along the eastern boundary. Portions of the Swan Mountain Range are on the western edge of the district between Seeley Lake and Lake Holland. The entire area consists of large mountains with basins, ridges, a number of deep canyons and a vast drainage system flowing from alpine lakes. This can be a challenging and physically demanding hunt.
Alpine basins are covered with a wide variety of wildflowers and grasses. Rocky outcrops above timber line have moss and lichens. Barren ground willows are found near some alpine lakes. Large stands of spruce, lodgepole pine and Douglas fir cover mountain slopes with mountain shrubs, ponderosa pine and groves of aspen at lower elevations. Large grassy open meadows are scattered across the mountains.
There are a few primitive roads that will lead to trailheads to access hunting areas or goat habitat. National Forest trailheads provide jump off points into hundreds of square miles of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.
Flathead National Forest and the Bob Marshall Wilderness offer dispersed camping. National Forest improved campsites can be reached off of Montana Route 83. Seeley Lake is the closest community providing motels, café and restaurants, limited medical facilities and gas and diesel.
