On The Ground

This hunting district is found in northwest Montana along the Idaho border and just south of the town of Libby. This area features extremely steep terrain, nearly impassible ground cover at times, and some truly wild country including a large portion of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Good deer and elk numbers will be encountered here, yet the average age of animals taken is generally fairly low. Some wise old bulls and bucks do roam the district, but finding them can prove to be very difficult due to the terrain. While it’s fairly uncommon, grizzlies can be encountered in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness and proper precautions should be taken.

The overall health of deer and elk is improving recently in this area after a few harsh winters and some sporadic predator problems. This area is not for the faint of heart though, as the country will surely take every ounce of mental toughness out of you.

Terrain

Overall, this district is comprised of one kind of terrain, Steep. Ground cover is generally thick and nearly jungle like throughout the entirety of the district and every draw and canyon is sure to push you to your physical limits. On the eastern half of the districts hunters will find some agricultural land and easier terrain to traverse, due to numerous logging roads, but those wishing to hunt the high country should put physical fitness at the top of their preparation list.

  • Roughly 757 square miles

  • 77.2% public land

  • Elevations from 2,100–8,700 feet

The climate found in the northwest Montana is unlike most other areas in the state. This area commonly sees heavier precipitation throughout the year than most other districts and the vegetation shows it. Down low, hunters will commonly encounter large cedar trees, mountain maple clusters and devil's club. Ponderosa pine can be found here, but in much less frequency than what most Montanans are used too. As the elevation climbs the a-typical mixture of Douglas fir, red fir, lodgepole, larch and subalpine fir can be found. Huckleberry bushes can generally be found in droves in most spots and will be large bear magnets in the fall.

This area is comprised almost entirely of publicly accessible lands with Forest Service lands making up the bulk of these. Some private land will be found along the eastern boundary as well as the central portion of the district along the Bull River. With terrain this big hunters will generally have little problem escaping other hunting pressure and with some effort can find themselves alone in very big country. Look for areas away from roads or trailheads and you should encounter very little competition. Quite a few outfitters operate in this area and major trailheads will generally be a hotspot as this will allow easy access for their livestock.

  • Main roads of access will include Highway 56 and Highway 2

  • Hunter numbers will be higher near roads and trailheads

  • Focus on areas far away from driveable roads

  • Expect heavy outfitter presence near trailheads

Quite a few primitive campsites can be found throughout the district and some modern lodging options can be found in Libby or Troy. Groceries, gear and sporting goods can be found in both towns as well, but it may be necessary to meet most of your gear needs prior to leaving for the hunt. Primitive camping is permitted for up to 14 days but due to heavy snowfall in this area it is not recommended during the any weapons season unless using a wall tent.
