On The Ground
This unit is 89% private with good access from county roads. Hunters must have a landowner’s permission to hunt.
Mule deer and antelope are distributed throughout the unit in fair numbers. This is not known as a unit for hunters looking for mule deer big enough to qualify for the Boone and Crockett Club records. Whitetails numbers are low. Mule deer and whitetails may be found along Rush Creek and in the Karval State Wildlife Area with pronghorns in the north.

Shortgrass prairie with interspersed dry farmland and a few cottonwood creek bottoms.
Access
County roads provide access to private land. Hunters need permission from landowners to hunt.
Karval State Wildlife Area consists of just 265 acres.
3.6 square miles of BLM land is near Karval SWA.
Camping and Lodging
Three state wildlife areas in or near this unit allow camping: Karval, Hugo and Kinney Lake. Limon is the closest town to the northern part of the unit. Ordway is near the Southern boundary. Both towns offer most services. The Koshare Indian Kiva is on the Otero Junior College campus in La Junta and is one of Colorado's premier attractions. It is worth a visit.
