Quick Tips

  • GPS, Maps, or a compass are highly recommended
  • Be sure to call and check with the Wyoming Game and Fish office to ensure the hunt area is still open

On The Ground

This unit is located on the western side of the state along the Greys River, and is known as the best black bear unit in the state with a great average harvest. With that and the easy access to all of the public land and no Wilderness Area, this unit should be at the top of your list.

This is the number one unit for black bears in the state. Some of the largest black bears are found here.

All of this unit is in the Bridger National Forest, and the entire unit runs along the Greys River. This is a narrow river valley that runs between the Salt River mountain range and the Wyoming mountain range. The mountains in this unit have steep timber-covered ridges. Once above timberline, you are going to find what you would typically think of in an alpine environment, big basins with bald rocky mountain peaks.

  • Roughly 488 square miles

  • 99.5% public land

  • Elevations range from 6,500-12,500 feet

Besides the very small section of this unit in the town of Alpine, this unit runs the length of the Greys River and is in the Bridger National Forest. Along the Greys River and the many other smaller creeks, are the typical thick brush and pockets of willows. The mountains in this unit have steep, timber-covered ridges. Once you make it above timberline, you are going to find what you would typically think of in an alpine environment, big basins with bald rocky mountain peaks. Like all mountains in Wyoming, you will find lodgepole pines, white pines, juniper and aspen trees throughout the range.

Access in and around this unit couldn’t be better. The Greys River/La Barge Road runs the entire length of the unit. There are multiple roads that spur off of it to the east and the west, that allow access to the Salt River mountain range and the Wyoming mountain range. In the northern portion of this unit, just outside of Alpine, you will find the Little Greys River Road which provides access to the northeast portion of the unit. Even with all the roads in this unit, there is plenty of country to get away and do a backcountry hunt.

  • Maps, GPS, and a Compass are recommended

  • There are two small sections of private land along the Greys River Road

Depending on where you plan on hunting in this unit, you are probably going to want to bring in all of your supplies with you. Alpine, which is in the very northern portion of this unit, is really the only town in the area. If you are hunting towards the southern portion of this unit, you can go to Afton or La Barge, but you will have to drive quite a distance to get to them. As for camping and lodging in this unit, there are a few established campgrounds along the Greys River. There are over 20 trailheads in this unit where you could set up a base camp. Remember though, this is National Forest so you can set up a camp just about anywhere you want to.

  • Limited number of established campgrounds

  • More than 20 trailheads throughout this unit

  • Really only one town to provide provisions in this unit unless you are willing to drive a long distance
