On The Ground

This unit includes the Sand Springs Range, Fairview Peak, Slate Mountain, Monte Cristo Mountains, Dead Camel Mountains and Lahontan Valley. Most land is barren or covered by desert brush and holds desert bighorn sheep, antelope and mule deer.

Terrain

Steep elevation changes occur in the Sand Spring Range, on Fairview Peak and on Slate Mountain. The remainder of the unit is relatively mild with rolling hills to flat valleys. Elevations range from 3,800 feet in the valley floor to approximately 8,300 feet at Fairview Peak. Scattered natural and artificial water sources throughout the unit.

  • Roughly 2,377 square miles

  • 77.9% public land

  • Elevations from 3,800 to a little more than 7,500 feet

Desert brush dominates most of the unit’s vegetated public land, while portions of Fairview Peak holds small stands of juniper. Lahontan Valley is covered with agricultural crops while the remaining lower elevation areas are made up of salt flats and wetlands.

The Lahontan Valley is made up of large tracts of private land, but the remainder of the unit is widely public. Public vehicle access is available in most regions of the unit. Areas that do not include vehicle access can be reached by hiking. US Highway 50 serves as a primary route through the unit and provides good access to the central and southeast part of the unit. US Highway 95 also serves as a primary route through the unit, providing access to the central portion of the unit, as well as the north and south. The eastern Salt Wells Basin Road provides access to the western side of the Sand Springs Range, while State Route 839, which stems south from US Highway 50 into Fairview Valley, provides good access to the eastern side of the Sand Springs Range.

Carry plenty of supplies, food, water and spare tires. The closest lodging is provided in Fallon, located in the center of the unit. Motels are also available in Fernley, to the west. General supplies are also provided at each of these locations. Fuel and a hot meal are available at Middle Gate, located on US Highway 50 in the southeastern part of the unit.

  • Hunters can camp almost anywhere on public land.
