On The Ground

Located in East-Central Montana, this is one of the largest antelope hunting district in the state. District 700 not only offers great hunting opportunities but breathtaking scenery as well.

This district produces good bucks, but you will have to work for them. Antelope populations are still rebounding from the winter of 2011. Good bucks are harvested annually on public land. Access to private land will be difficult, but public land is easily accessible.

Terrain

Terrain will vary from sagebrush and grass prairies within wide-open badlands to deep juniper covered draws. The elevations remain somewhat constant. Game can be found year round at all elevations. BLM, The Charles M Russell (CMR) National Wildlife Refuge, Forest Service and state land all make up the public land. Hunters hunting district 700 need to check with Montana Dept. of Fish, Wildlife and Parks to inquire about the Block Management Program. The program allows public access to private lands.

  • Roughly 2,789 square miles

  • 36.1% public land

  • Elevations from 1,800-3,500 feet

Numerous small livestock tanks are found throughout antelope habitat. Wells, pipelines and small streams also provide much needed water for pronghorns. Vegetation is largely comprised of native grasses such as bluebunch wheatgrass, western wheatgrass, green needlegrass, blue grama, little bluestem, prairie sandreed and Sandberg's bluegrass. Some areas are dominated by crested wheatgrass. Shrubs are generally found throughout, with lesser amounts in the far northeastern portion of the district. Sagebrush and rubber rabbitbrush are found throughout some areas.

Access to private land can be an issue and you will need a good map and a GPS. Recommended is a GPS with a landowner overlay. There is some accessible BLM, state land, CMR and Forest Service land.

Lodging, gas and groceries are available in several communities scattered throughout the district. These towns include Miles City, Glendive, Sidney, Jordan and Broadus. These are small towns that are accustomed to catering to hunters. There are campgrounds along the Missouri River. Camping is allowed on state and BLM land.
