On The Ground
This hunt district is located in south central Montana north of Interstate 90. This unit has some good quality antelope located in it, but it is all private land and extremely difficult access to the better areas.
Antelope populations are stable. A few large ranches have a majority of the antelope and gaining access to these is extremely difficult. Some smaller ranches do allow access, but generally the quality is not as good on these properties.
Terrain
The area is mostly grasslands with some sagebrush scattered throughout. The area starts along the Shields River Valley and goes uphill to the foothills of the Crazy Mountains. This is a very scenic antelope unit with mountains in every direction. This unit is great for spot and stalk hunting as the area is quite diverse with breaks, creek drainages and ridges.
Roughly 248 square miles
15.1% public land
Elevations from 3,500-6,000 feet
Vegetation
The areas adjacent to the Shields River Valley and Cottonwood Creek are irrigated hayfields. Above that are mainly grasslands all the way to the base of the Crazy Mountains. There are numerous breaks with sagebrush, juniper, cedar and pine trees on the southern part of the unit. All of this unit is easy for walking as none of it is very steep or rough.
Access
This unit is easily accessed from Highway 89N on the west boundary and by numerous gravel county roads throughout the unit. The unit is mostly private land and access can be very difficult.
Camping and Lodging
Livingston is the nearest town and has numerous motels, gas stations, restaurants and a sporting goods store.
