On The Ground

Hunters take moose every year in this area. This unit has part of Rexburg and Sugar City in the east, a lot of state land in the middle and national forest land in the southeast.

This unit has a lot of moose on state land and in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest in the eastern half, but not as many in private lands to the west. Bulls average antler spreads of around 36-42”.

Terrain

The western half of this area has flat farmland and private rangeland that isn’t good moose habitat even though bulls occasionally live in washes and along creek bottoms. The eastern half of the unit has foothills with some steep hills and mountains in the southeastern corner. Most of the mountains here are in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

  • Roughly 358 square miles

  • 30% public land

  • Elevations from 5,200-7,900 feet

Most of this unit is farmland planted in alfalfa, grass hay, potatoes, grains and other crops. The central part is made up of high desert shrub land that is dominated by sagebrush, junipers, serviceberries, chokecherries, bitterbrush and other browse plants. Cottonwoods, willows, birches typically grow near canals, in dry and wet creek bottoms and along the Snake and South Fork of the Teton Rivers. Some juniper and mahoganies grow on steep slopes in the eastern half of the area. The bigger foothills and mountains are mainly covered with conifers such as pines, firs and spruces.

Most moose in this area live on public land. A lot of roads give access to the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Main access can be found through Kirkham Hollow Road that branches from South Canyon Creek Road. This road is designated Forest Road 218, Graham Hollow Road and Fish Creek Loop-South Moody Road.

  • Four-wheel drive is recommended

  • ATVs are legal on open secondary roads and designated trails

  • Carry a GPS

Hunters can camp along roads in the National Forest or on state land. Nine campgrounds can be found here, including Tablerock Campground. The BLM maintains Kelly’s Island Campground on the bank of the South Fork on Kelly Island Road. Rexburg also has motel lodging.
