The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) has extended its preference point application period by a month, pushing the original deadline from Sept. 30 to Oct. 31. Yet, because Oct. 31 falls on a weekend this year and deadlines are automatically extended to the next business day, hunters gain two extra days to purchase points.

According to the WGFD website, preference points are available for elk, deer, antelope, moose and sheep. Eligible buyers must be either big game hunters who did not apply for a moose or bighorn sheep license this year or nonresident elk, deer or antelope hunters who did not apply for a license or failed to draw their first choice and neglected to mark the preference point box on their license application, according to Big Horn Radio Network.

Like many western states, Wyoming uses a preference point system that allows hunters to increase their odds during license drawings. 75% of the state’s available licenses are distributed through a preference point drawing each year. Preference points are also available for youth applicants, but the youth must be at least 11 years old to apply and at least 12 years old by Dec. 31 of the application year.
