Quick Tips
- Hunting conditions generally improve as the season progresses
- Quality optics will be important for the hunt
- Wilderness area present within the unit
On The Ground
This large unit is found in the western part of the state and shares a border with Idaho. A wide range of terrain types are found here from sprawling farmlands to high elevation rocky peaks. This area is on the southern end of the primary wolf range but hunters do occasionally harvest a few every year. In general, this is a great unit to carry a wolf tag while hunting other big game but hunters looking to specifically pursue the species will find better luck in surrounding areas.
A smaller density of wolves can be found here and packs can be very challenging to locate. In general, hunters can find better options in adjoining areas.
Terrain
The terrain in this unit consists of rugged, steep timber covered mountains opening up at higher elevations and large sage flats in the valleys. The higher you go in this unit, the more majestic and beautiful the country gets. In the high elevation areas hunters will find plenty of glassing opportunities.
Roughly 1,300 square miles
88% public land
Elevations range from 6,000 - 10,000 feet
Vegetation
Most of the unit has typical Wyoming vegetation. Grass and sagebrush is the main vegetation that can be found on the north and east end, giving mule deer good winter range. The south and east parts of the unit will have more conifers and meadows in the higher elevations and pinyon and juniper with grass and sagebrush in the foothills. Most of the Bridger Wilderness doesn’t have a lot of vegetation with rock and shale covering the terrain.
Access
Access in and around this unit couldn’t be better. The Greys River/La Barge Road runs the entire length of the unit. There are multiple roads that spur off of it to the east and the west, that allow access to the Salt River mountain range and the Wyoming mountain range. In the northern portion of this unit, just outside of Alpine, you will find the Little Greys River Road which provides access to the northeast portion of the unit. Even with all the roads in this unit, there is plenty of country to get away and do a backcountry hunt.
Camping and Lodging
Depending on where you plan on hunting in this unit, you are probably going to want to bring in all of your supplies with you. Alpine, which is in the very northern portion of this unit, is really the only town in the area. If you are hunting towards the southern portion of this unit, you can go to Afton or La Barge, but you will have to drive quite a distance to get to them. As for camping and lodging in this unit, there are a few established campgrounds along the Greys River. There are over 20 trailheads in this unit where you could set up a base camp. Remember though, this is National Forest so you can set up a camp just about anywhere you want to.
