On The Ground

Located north of Ten Sleep, this unit consists of lower crop lands and turns into steep canyons and cedars in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. For nonresidents, this area is part of Region R and tags drawn for this area are also valid in: 46, 47, 50, 51, 52, 53.

Hunting mule deer in the west half of the unit can be more difficult than other areas. Over the past few years, mule deer numbers have been lower than usual. They are hard to hunt, but the trophy potential is there in the unit.

Terrain

Terrain here consists of a riparian river bottom on Tensleep Creek, Nowood River and the Bighorn River. The lower elevations are made up of sagebrush flats and deep cuts with agriculture land mixed in. As you gain elevation you will get into rocky, steep canyons, long drainages and rocky bluffs.

  • Roughly 517 square miles

  • 71.5% public land

  • Elevations from 3,900-8,700 feet

Lower elevations consist of sagebrush flats, prairie grasses and agriculture fields. As you gain elevation you will come across ponderosa pine and juniper pockets. Hardwoods and willows can be found along the creek bottoms.

Public access is good in this unit. Main public roads and two tracks allow you to get into remote country by use of a four wheel drive vehicle. An ATV is extremely helpful in this unit for getting around. Maps displaying land ownership are very helpful in deciphering public from private land while in the field.

  • Wet and snowy conditions make for slick and muddy roads; four-wheel drive and tire chains are recommended for both conditions

  • Maps showing land ownership are recommended

  • Check out Renner Wildlife Habitat Management Area for more access

  • ATVs are useful

Ten Sleep, north of the unit, has camping, motels, gas stations and basic groceries. Worland and Thermopolis are a short drive from Ten Sleep and have a lot more options for lodging, meals and services. Grocery stores, gas stations and other amenities can be found in Worland as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can also camp in remote locations near Hyattville Road and Cold Springs Road.
