On The Ground
This small unit is divided between Snoqualmie National Forest and private land, mainly owned by Weyerhaeuser Company. There are major power lines and train tracks running diagonally through the top portion of this unit, meeting the Green River on the western boundary flowing from its headwaters to the southeast. In 2017 there was a sizeable forest fire, basically on Weyerhaeuser land. Just to the east in the National Forest, there is a roadless area offering a bit of elbow room for those willing to hike off of the beaten path. Due to the complexities of private vs. public land, including significant checkerboarding, the use of a GPS is highly recommended when hunting this thickly timbered and steep country where 2,500-ft elevation gains are common. Early snowfall has the potential to not only catch hunters ill-prepared and to move game seemingly overnight.
This unit sees a lot of hunting pressure.
Terrain
The terrain is very steep with old growth and secondary growth conifer forests. This small unit does have some unique terrain features to keep in mind, such as large power lines that are clear cut below, winding train tracks, Green River headwaters, clear cutting, 2017 wildfire areas, and a small bit of roadless.
Roughly 90 square miles
59% public land
Elevations range from 1,700– 5,600 feet
Vegetation
Conifer forests of ponderosa pine, douglas fir and grand fir dominate the GMU with lots of secondary growth. There was a fire on private land a few years back that will start to draw deer and elk towards it in the coming years as it will offer some good browse. There is significant clear cutting below large power lines dissecting the GMU in the north that are always attracting game. Open areas offer native tender grasses, forbs, and buckbrush.
Access
This unit offers decent public access and a decent series of unimproved roads, just watch for seasonal closures. There are large blocks of private that are significantly checkerboarded. The western portion of the Snoqualmie National Forest is roadless offering the backpack hunter a bit of space.
Lots of checkerboarding between Snoqualmie National Forest and Weyerhaeuser Company land
Check into Weyerhaeuser public access programs
Camping and Lodging
Primitive camping in the National Forest is allowed for the majority of the year, however, various fire bans and forest road closures may happen, so double check any restrictions or permits necessary prior to your trip. There are no nearby towns with lodging or fuel.
