On The Ground
A large unit with some excellent public hunting grounds. Topography and terrain vary from east to west, along with a big elevation change. I-15 makes up the western border and US 89 the eastern border of this unit. There is lodging near most hunting areas.
Great elk numbers can be found here along with excellent habitat. Expect a decent amount of local hunters but some effort should lead to success.
Terrain
The elk terrain in this unit is big country with deep canyons and large, flat openings full of sagebrush. There is steep timber on the mountainsides and some steep canyons throughout the unit.
Roughly 882 square miles
80% public land
Elevations from 7,500-10,500 feet
Vegetation
Ponderosa pines and aspens can be found at high elevations. Sagebrush and pinyon/juniper cover low to middle elevations. Willows grow wherever there’s enough water.
Access
Plenty of public roads and four-wheel-drive trails can take you to a starting point in any part of this unit. Private land does not significantly delay access. Cedar Breaks National Monument in the west is closed to hunting.
Camping and Lodging
RV parks and motels are available in Panguitch as well as near Panguitch Lake. Both sites are close to hunting grounds. Cedar City also provides lodging, supplies, and services but is further from hunting areas. There are several established campgrounds throughout the unit that hunters can stay at.
