This large unit is found in northern Utah and encompaseses a large protion of the Wasatch Mountains. Elk can be found throughout the hunting area but will generally be in the mid elevation areas during this hunt. Physical exertion can be high here and hunters need to consider this prior to the hunt.
Good numbers of elk are found here and hunters willing to work for it can be in for a fun hunt.
On top of the mountain range are large meadows and flats with steep creek drainages leading down to the valley floor. Just up from the valley floor are rolling foothills. With a varied terrain in the unit, there are a lot of areas for game to hide where they may not get pressured.
The low elevations in this unit have dry rolling hills and flats, with grass, prickly-pear cactus, sagebrush, and scattered pinyons and junipers. Sagebrush continues into the middle elevations, which are also covered in ponderosa pines and oakbrush. The higher elevations have scattered aspen groves and steep slopes covered in conifer forests.
A majority of the unit is part of one of three national forests, providing great public access. There is road access on all sides of the unit, with well-maintained dirt roads leading to less-maintained four-wheel-drive roads or ATV trails. There are some large private pieces of property, along with the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, which limits access. Four wilderness areas, Mount Olympus, Twin Peaks, Lone Peak and Mount Timpanogos, will only allow foot or horse traffic.
Modern lodging options can be found throughout the unit and hunter swill simply need to pick the closest town to their desired hunting area. Groceries and sporting goods can be found in nearly every town within the unit with good selections.
