This unit is found in north central Utah and just east of Salt Lake City. Hunters will find great public access here along with tons of roadless areas to escape the competition. Good elk numbers can be found here and hunters will to work for success stand a good chance at filling a tag.
Good elk numbers and tons of public access are found in this unit and a successfully punched tag is attainable by anyone willing to work for it.
There is some low lying valley lands found on the western end of the unit but this area is primarily comprised of steep and tall ridge lines. From the many creek bottoms these large ridgelines climb for anywhere between 1,500 and 3,000 feet. Cross country travel can be very difficult here but a good trail system is present. Most of the ridgelines and peaks found in the central part of the unit are comprised of large scree fields and usually provide little to no habitat.
This area is almost entirely timbered with the exception of some low-lying south-facing slopes, scree fields, and high alpine meadows. The open areas in the lower elevations will be the typical dispersion of sage, native grasses, and sporadic pinyon-juniper. The north sides of these open faces will generally see heavy tree cover comprised of pine, fir, and spruce. Oak brush will have a constant presence throughout the unit. The highest elevations will see large alpine meadows full of sage and natural grasses. Pine, subalpine fir, and spruce will also grow in these areas.
This area has a lot to offer for access in the form of a pile of public lands and good trail systems. Most of the high country will only be accessible to those willing to walk although quite a few ATV trails can be found throughout the unit. Physical conditioning can make a big difference on this hunt, particularly during the early season.
There are no modern lodging options found within the unit but hunters will find plenty of options in nearby Salt Lake City. Groceries and some sporting goods stores can be found in some small towns but special needs will need to be met in Salt Lake City or prior to leaving for the hunt.
