On The Ground

This unit is located in northern Utah along the northeastern end of Salt Lake City. For being located next to a large city this unit features a surprising amount of public hunting opportunity.

Hunters will find decent amounts of public access options along with some challenging terrain to pursue animals.

Terrain

Found along the famous Wasatch Mountain range this area features plenty of terrain options for hunters to enjoy. From the outskirts of Salt Lake City the mountains rise sharply off the valley floor and climb into high mountain ridges and basins. Here, hunters will find a large amount of elevation gain and loss when following ridges and plenty of areas for game to be found.

  • Roughly 255 square miles

  • 40% Public Land

  • Elevations range from 5,000-8,200 feet

This area features a fairly wide array of vegetation with ground cover being quite heavy in areas. Lower elevation areas will see a heavy presence of oak brush making cross country travel difficult at times. As elevation is increased tree cover from pines, aspen, and spruce will increase along with the presence of cliffs and large rocky outcroppings. The highest elevations will generally see large alpine fields of grass, lupine, and snowberry.

Most of the highcountry can be accessed and hunted on public grounds. Some of the lower elevations will see heavy foot traffic from day hikers and recreationists. The biggest challenge for some will be physically accessing some of the higher elevation areas.

  • Main roads of access will include Interstate 15, Interstate 80, Highway 65, and Interstate 84

Because of this unit's reciprocity with Salt Lake City hunters will find little trouble when looking for modern lodging, sporting goods, or groceries. Camping on public lands is permitted for up to 14 consecutive days.
