This unit is found in northeast Utah and centered around the town of Vernal. This area is largely private but a few large tracts of public are available to hunt. This area features low elk populations and the hunt was primarily designed to help limit crop damage during years of heavy snows.
This area typically holds a very low populations of elk and most hunters will usually look into surrounding units with much better hunting opportunities.
This area experiences very little terrain change with the exception of the some of the areas on the north end of the unit. The areas around vernal are primarily flat agricultural lands with rolling foothills for the remainder on the unit. The north end does see more elevation change but the unit boundary keeps hunters from getting too far into this country.
This area is primarily open high desert country comprised of sage, native grasses, and periodic patches of pinyon juniper. Glassing opportunities will be aplenty here and large herds of elk will not be hard to spot when present in the area.
A good road system can lead hunters into any of the larger sections of public land. A large portion of the elk habitat on the unit will be found on private lands which will not be huntable without permission for access.
