This unit is found in south-central Utah and features great elk hunting, especially during years of good snow. Hunters will find great access here and miles of public land. This hunting area is very open and will be an optics-dominated hunt.
This area holds a good amount of elk and through hard work and determination hunters stand a good chance of punching a tag.
The northern half of the unit is primarily open dester type lands with very little elevation change or vegetation cover with the exception of patches of juniper that can be found to the west around Parker Mountain. To the south small islands of timber will pop up intermixed between huge meadows and numerous ponds. Timber cover will continue to increase the further south you travel until the elevation drops off dramatically into the Black Hills and the Death Hollow Wilderness. Here the ground cover will reduce almost completely but pinyon juniper will grow in dense groves. Traversing the terrain can be tough at times here but with a healthy road system hunts should never need to hike very far at any given time.
In the lower lying and more open areas hunters will encounter the typical Utah mixture of native grasses, sage, and pinyon juniper. In the higher elevation area large stands of pine and fir will be encountered along with periodic patches of aspen near large draws and areas with a higher moisture content.
With this area being almost entirely public land, hunters will have few issues when it comes to locating hunting areas. A good road and trail system can be found throughout the unit making for great access options most anyone. A few roadless canyons and draws can be found but most of these areas can usually be glassed from a vehicle at distance. During periods of really heavy snowfall traveling can be difficult. ATV’s and snowmobiles can help greatly.
There are modern lodging options found throughout the unit including Bryce, Tropic, Cannonville, and Escalante. These are primarily found along the southern border of the unit and hunters hunting the north end can find a few options just outside of the unit in Richfield. Groceries and sporting goods can be found in moderation throughout any town in the unit but specialty needs will need to be met prior to the hunt beginning.
Roughly 1,250 square miles
98% public land
Elevations range from 6,900- 10,500 feet
Main roads of access will include Highway 62, Highway 24, Highway 12, Smooth Knoll Rd, Main Canyon Sweetwater Rd, and Johns Valley Rd
ATV’s can make traveling around the hunting area much quicker and easier
Tire chains recommended
There are modern options on the southern end of the unit in Bryce, Tropic, Cannonville, and Escalante
Hunters on the north end of the unit will need to RV or Truck camp or look for lodging just outside of the unit.
Sporting goods and groceries can be found in moderation but will likely need to be purchased prior to the hunt beginning.
