This unit is found in south central Utah and features good hunting for hunters willing to work for it. A decent amount of elk can be found here but access issues can arise during periods of heavy snow. A large portion of the east side of this unit lies within the Capitol Reef National Park and is not huntable.
This area holds a good amount of elk and hunters willing to work for it can find success.
This unit can be characterized as essentially being one large plateau. The central portion of the unit forms a large high elevation profile with very sporadic tree coverage. From the plateau ridgelines drop off quickly in every direction and eventually flow out into lower elevation areas. The lower lying areas will not see a large elevation change between drainages but many finger ridges will be found creating a lot of hiding spots for animals.
Most of the low-lying areas surrounding the plateau will have a general makeup of aspen, fir, and ponderosa pine timber stands with large meadows of grasses and sage intermixed throughout. Along the northern and eastern sides of the unit pinyon-juniper will grow in moderation. The high-country areas along the plateau will be primarily comprised of large expanses of native grass, sage, and very sporadic tree cover. Small ponds and lakes will also be spread out throughout the plateau area.
This area is almost entirely public and it will not be difficult for hunters to find good hunting areas. During periods of heavy snow it can be difficult to cover ground and it may be necessary for hunters to use ATV’s and even snow mobiles. Other than snow concerns hunters will not face much issue when covering ground due to a generally easy going terrain.
Modern lodging options can be found throughout the unit with the most options being found in Boulder, Torrey, and Bicknell. Groceries and sporting goods can be found in short supply here and specialty needs will likely need to be met prior to the hunt.
