Hunters discussing the West Desert in Utah highlight the unit's diverse terrain and challenging access conditions, which can vary significantly depending on weather and time of year. Many recommend preparing for long hikes to reach prime hunting areas, as vehicle access may be limited. Deer and elk populations are noted to be present, but pinpointing their locations requires detailed scouting, especially given the unit's vastness. Successful hunters emphasize the importance of understanding local game behavior and seasonal movements, as well as openly sharing tips on effective hunting strategies in this rugged area.
Limited numbers of elk are found in the desert mountains of this unit, which is west of Utah Lake and east of Dugway Valley and includes part of the Sevier Desert and the west and east Tintic ranges.
This is one of the more difficult elk hunting areas in the West with very few elk found in the unit.
