On The Ground
Mostly BLM land covered by sagebrush, this unit is composed of the Fish Creek Mountains and parts of the bordering valleys. Hunters find mule deer and pronghorn antelope here. Private circular crop fields irrigated by pivot sprinklers draw game in the northeast and southeast.
The unit has a small desert sheep herd. Deer and antelope tags are not to difficult to draw. Access to public hunting grounds is good.
Terrain
Some slopes are steep, particularly in the Mount Moses region and along the southwestern face of the Fish Creek Mountains. The rest of the land is gentle with rolling hills, shallow and deep swales, benches and flats.
Roughly 582 square miles
89.3% public land
Elevations from about 4,100-8,649 feet Mount Moses
Vegetation
Sagebrush covers most ground, pinyon and juniper are typically scattered and sparse. Dense willows grow in creek bottoms. Aspens grow in stands in the Cottonwood Pass region and in some of the drainages on the west face of the Fish Creek Mountains. Land below 6,000 feet in elevation is mostly a mixture of sagebrush, fourwing saltbush and greasewood.
Access
Except for fields in the northeast and southeast and a few square miles in the Daisy and Cottonwood pass areas, virtually all land is public and managed by the BLM. Any public land that can’t be reached by public roads is accessible to hikers. Some primitive roads branch from the following primary routes: Buffalo Valley, Jersey Valley roads in the west, State Route 305 in the east, Copper Basin Road in the north and Brides Wells and Home Station Wash roads in the south.
Camping and Lodging
Lodging and general supplies are available in Battle Mountain, which is 30-90 minutes from most hunting areas. Most hunters camp, which is allowed anywhere on public land. A campground is at Willow Creek Reservoir to the north in Unit 151.
