On The Ground
Mule deer and antelope are well-distributed in this unit, whose major landmarks include the Majuba and Eugene mountains, Antelope Range, parts of the Trinity Range and Rye Patch Reservoir. Mostly covered by desert brush, the land is mostly public BLM range with good road access.
Terrain
Southeast of the Black Rock Desert and touching Lovelock in the south, this unit is mostly mild to flat terrain though parts of the Eugene and Majuba mountains and the Antelope Range are steep. The Humboldt River meanders snakelike over flats and between short, steep ridges along the eastern boundary. Part of the river is backed up by Rye Patch Dam, creating six-mile-long and narrow Rye Patch Reservoir.
Roughly 1,261 square miles
58.7% public land
Elevations from about 4,000 feet to about 7,582 in the Eugene Mountains
Vegetation
Lowlands vary from playa to river bottoms that support riparian brush and grasses. Desert brush covers most hills and mountains except for scattered stands of junipers and aspens at high elevations, such as in the Eugene Mountains.
Access
Most land is public, but much of it is arranged in a checkerboard pattern with private land. Part of the Upper Valley near Lovelock is private as well as some property along Interstate 80. Hunters can drive to most areas and can hike to most other places. Primitive roads branch into the interior from I-80 in the south and east, Jungo Road in the north and Seven Troughs Road in the west.
Camping and Lodging
Carry plenty of supplies, food, water and spare tires. Motels are in Lovelock in the south and Winnemucca at the northeastern tip. Hunters can buy fuel and supplies at Ms. B’s truck stop located at Mill City on I-80.
Hunters can camp almost anywhere on public land
Two campgrounds at Rye Patch Reservoir have a total of 47 sites
Hunters must pay a fee to camp at Rye Patch campgrounds
