On The Ground

Unit 482 is on the western edge of the Missouri River Breaks and on the South side of the Missouri river, this very broken terrain offers plenty of opportunity to cover many miles on foot, and spend a whole lot of time behind your optics.

This hunting district is producing some of the largest rams in the state. Some of the best access is from the Missouri River, which requires a boat. There are areas to hunt from the road systems, but access can be frustrating.

Terrain

The Missouri River is the northern boundary and provides some of better hunting opportunities. Along the banks of the Missouri River there are steep clay bluffs mixed with Juniper and Ponderosa pine. Away from the Missouri River hunters should prepare for elevation changes between 500-700 vertical feet.

  • Roughly 506 square miles

  • 28.3% public land

  • Elevations from 2,250-3,500 feet

The Missouri River, stock ponds and a few streams are the main water source for many of the animals. The vegetation is mainly Ponderosa pine, Juniper and Douglas fir on north and east slopes and in many of the draws. The ridges along with south and west slopes consist of sagebrush and grass and are usually fairly open.

There is a lot of public access on both BLM and state land, but some of the better areas for hunting are along private land. A GPS with a land ownership map is very important. The highest sheep densities are on the northern half of the district and a boat will help access much of these areas.

  • ATV’s are useful to drive established roads, and under adverse weather conditions

  • Knox Ridge Road runs through the middle of the district and is gravel except for the portion on the CMR Wildlife Refuge, with precipitation CMR portion is not passable

Lewistown is the nearest city with accommodations, but is an hour drive to the hunt district. There are multiple places for lodging in Lewistown along with a grocery stores and gas stations. Fred Robinson Bridge where highway 191 crosses the Missouri River is a large developed campground, and would reduce your drive time to about 15 minutes to the eastern border. Camping is also allowed on most public land. There are some areas to camp in Winifred, along with fuel and a few restaurants.
