On The Ground

This district is immediately north and west of Yellowstone National Park and around the town of West Yellowstone in south central Montana. It also borders Idaho on the south. Much of it is a rugged mountainous area with many high peaks and numerous alpine basins in the Taylor Hilgard District of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness.

The sheep population is stable after experiencing a die off in the past. Sheep can be difficult to locate in the wilderness and remote areas of this district as there is a lot of rugged country, but there are a few pockets of rams that are historically in the same locales. This district has spectacular scenery and is beautiful sheep country.

Terrain

A majority of the sheep inhabit the Lee Metcalf Wilderness and adjoining Cabin Creek Wildlife Management Area. Most of the major peaks are over 10,000 feet and are alpine and rocky. There is a lot of alpine country above timberline in this district. The National Forest lands above Hebgen Lake are not wilderness but are still rugged mountainous terrain.

  • Roughly 561 square miles

  • 82.7% public land

  • Elevations from 6,000-11,300 feet

The areas adjacent to the rivers and creeks have open grassland hills and as you gain in elevation it is timbered. The next elevation is covered with subalpine grasses and scattered subalpine conifers. This area is intermixed with boulder fields, rocky ridges and extremely steep faces. From here you are into the steep talus slopes leading up to the rocky peaks, only moss and lichens are found in this zone.

There are several access points into this district, Taylor Fork, Sage Creek and Teepee Creek on the east. Cabin Creek and Beaver Creek are on the south and Indian Creek on the west will put you into this district. Hunting also occurs along the face near Quake Lake where many of the sheep winter. Hunting will be on foot and or horseback and numerous Forest Service trails are throughout the district.

There are spectacular places to camp throughout this district. There are some high mountain lakes with trout in them that are also excellent camping spots. Hunting can be accomplished by day hiking from some of the Forest Service trailheads. Motels, gas and restaurants are available in West Yellowstone.
