On The Ground

This district sitting on the Rocky Mountain Front south of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and northwest of Choteau. Trophy quality for elk and mule deer is high, but access is limited being greatly dominated by private ground.

Mule deer numbers are down and trophy quality has gone down in the last few years. Elk migrate in the district and lots of private ground can offer refuge. In many cases weather can be a major deciding factor.

Terrain

Classic Rocky Mountain Front district with the western edge having cliffs and peaks in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. While not as high as some montana peaks, this is alpine ground giving way to mountainous timbered foothills. The lower part of the district becomes rolling hill, ranch country with sparsely scattered timber patches and thick willow and timber choked creek bottoms.

  • Roughly 594 square miles

  • 38.7% public land

  • Elevations from 4,400-8,300 feet

This district has about anything you want to find from high alpine firs and grassy parks through pine filled timbered foothills, to lower rolling hills with a few bits of sage and hay fields. Thick willow creeks and swamps are available.

Public ground is available, but private ground can serve as refuge to the deer and elk. The Bob Marshall Wilderness part of this district is roadless, so boot leather or horses are your options to access. Numerous trailheads exist on the edge of the Bob and access roads to them will get you what you need.

Choteau and Dupuyer are the closest towns that offer lodging and amenities. Camping is available on state ground and Forest Service campgrounds on the Teton River. Camping is also available at the trailheads in many cases.
