On The Ground

This zone is found in the northeast corner of the state along the Wisconsin and Minnesota state lines. Good deer populations and great genetics are found here and anyone who puts in the time and research could find the buck of a lifetime. Like most other zones, this area is largely composed of private lands, but a decent amount of public access options are available. Most of this area is largely composed of privately owned crop lands, interspersed with extensive stands of mature hardwood trees, and numerous creeks, rivers, reservoirs, and swamps

Access

Similar to many other zones across the state, private lands dominate, making public access crucial for the do-it-yourself (DIY) hunter. Traditional state owned lands are scattered throughout the zone with some of the most notable pieces being located in the central and eastern portion of the area. Additionally, several large Wildlife management areas are also available for hunters. While private lands offer the best chances for success, hunters willing to dedicate effort and time to exploring public lands can still find a punched tag at the end of their hunt. Oftentimes, the best private lands are generally leased by outfitters. Looking into outfitters can be a great way to drastically increase your odds of success, and your odds of finding a good buck.

  • Roughly 3,549 square miles

  • 5% public land

Some of the bigger portions of land you might consider for public access:

  • State lands near Harpers Ferry - There is a large collection of state lands just south of the town of Harpers Ferry. This area sees a decent amount of topography change with some large and mature stands of timberlands.

  • North end of the zone - The north end of the zone features many WMA's, North of Decorah and Waukon, that open many thousands of acres of land. This could be a great place to base a hunt from.

  • Sweet Marsh WMA - Located on the extreme west side of this zone, this 2,300 acre WMA offers prime river bottom habitat along the Mississippi River.

  • Sny McGill - North Cedar WMA - This WMA encompasses nearly 2,000 acres and is found in the east central portion of the zone. This area is largely composed of rolling timberlands interspersed with rolling creek bottoms

Many large towns are available within this unit that can provide access to modern lodging, groceries, gear, and other amenities depending on the area you are planning to hunt. Lodging can typically be found in the form of motels, hotels, and rental properties. Public campgrounds and RV parks cover the unit with many of these being available in and around the areas with the best public access options.

Some of the larger towns and cities located in this zone:

  • Decorah - North central

  • Waukon - Northeast

  • New Hampton - West central

  • West Union - Centeral

  • Dubuque - Southeast corner
