On The Ground

Zone D-14, located in portions of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Vacation cabins draw a lot of hunters to the Lake Arrowhead area. Crestline sees lots of good bucks hit the dry side when the snow hits the ground. There are a lot of off-roading trails in this zone.

Terrain

This area contains the San Bernardino mountains which has the highest peak in southern California, Mount San Gorgonio at 11,503 feet elevation. Beautiful area between BB lake and Lucerne but expect a lot of hunter orange during rifle seasons.

  • Roughly 1,610 square miles

  • 58% public land

  • Elevations range from 2,800 – 11,500 feet

The vegetation in Zone D-14 varies with parts comprised of numerous desert plant communities ranging from desert dunes and desert scrub to riparian forests and Joshua tree woodlands. Deer are usually dispersed throughout the zone, but are most commonly found in washes that contain iron wood and palo verde vegetation. There are also parts ranging from oak-woodland, mixed chaparral, juniper-pinyon, hardwood, hardwood-conifer and dense conifer to desert habitats.

The majority of land in Zone D-14 is public and administered by the San Bernardino National Forest or the Bureau of Land Management.

There are a number of roadways available to access Zone D-14. The zone is bounded by State Highways 18 and 247 on the north, Interstate Highway 10 on the south, Interstate Highways 15 and 215 on the west and State Highway 62 on the east. These major highways, lead to several smaller county highways such as 138, 173, 30/330, and 38 that go into the heart of the zone.

There are numerous campgrounds on public lands throughout the zone, many of which close later in the hunting season. During fire season, special regulations may apply, and it is always best to contact the local USFS, BLM, or California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection office for the latest information.
