On The Ground
This mountainous unit is located along the Montana border. This area has a paved road running through the middle of it and produces a good number of moose every year.
Bull moose in this unit commonly have 33-38” racks, especially those that live along well-used roads. Hunters in remote places have a good chance of seeing 36-45” bulls.
Terrain
This area is characterized by steep mountains and deep canyons that straddle the Shoshone County/Clearwater County line and border Montana. Moose are scattered in the north side of the Kelly Creek drainage upstream from its mouth. Most land is between 4,000 and 6,000 feet above sea level. A few ridges and peaks are higher, including Chamberlain Mountain and the ridge that separates Idaho from Montana, where elevations exceed 7,000 feet in places. Most ridges and peaks are 1,500 to more than 3,000 above the creeks below them.

Vegetation
North slopes are timbered with spruces, firs, pines and cedars. South slopes are covered with scattered trees, brush, wild grasses and forbs. Some mountains, such as Gorman Hill, have many long meadows and recovering burns. Moose favor the edges between heavily forested and open or sparsely forested areas.
Access
Most of this unit is steep and requires hiking away from roads. Hunters can plan to use horses to access remote places and to help pack out moose meat and trophies. The main forest roads are Forest Road 250, Black Canyon and Deception roads. Forest Road 250 is paved and connects Pierce, Idaho, with Superior, Montana.

Camping and Lodging
Most hunters camp along roads. No towns with lodging are nearby. There are a few campgrounds along Forest Road 250. No fees are charged to use The Cedars Campground along Long Creek. Kelly Forks Campground is a developed fee site with 14 spots and a group campground.
