Shiras moose are mainly associated with Wyoming. The Boone and Crockett record book even titles the species as “Wyoming (Shiras) Moose.” This subspecies of moose is not exclusive to Wyoming, but the Cowboy State has historically placed more Shiras moose in the record book than any other state. The best days of moose hunting in Wyoming have passed thanks to the climbing number of wolves. Tag numbers in a lot of areas have dropped significantly due to wolf predation. Some areas of the state that are not impacted by wolves, and these areas are some of the best options and the hardest to draw. The B&C table of top counties shown below represents a historic picture. The top counties for trophy moose are also among the hardest hit by predation. Most of the areas along the western side of the state have wilderness areas, so nonresidents should plan accordingly. Nonresidents have to be accompanied by a licensed Wyoming outfitter, or a Wyoming resident to get onto designated wilderness areas. There is an opportunity to draw for applicants with less than maximum preference points, because the draw system allocates 25% of the moose tags to be drawn randomly. The other 75% are reserved for the applicants with the highest number of points within each hunt code. If you are not applying with a lot of points, then you should focus on areas with a high tag allocation in order to have a chance to draw a random tag. If you are serious about moose hunting in the lower 48, then apply in Wyoming before the numbers continue to decline from wolf predation.
