This unit is found in northeast Utah and lies along the Wyoming border. Hunters will find a large amount of public ground here although most of the elk habitat for this late hunt lies on the north end where a few large parcels of private are found. Elk will be fairly concentrated this time of the year and will be fairly easy to locate.
The late dates of this season will see elk in the low lying section of this unit near the Wyoming border. Heavy snows will make a large portion of this unit most uninhabitable for elk at this time.
The southern end of the unit is comprised partly on the High Uintah Wilderness. Here long rolling ridges that are heavily timbered will be encountered with large scree slopes in the highest elevations. This area is roadless and can difficult to access. The middle elevation areas will still see large stands of mature timber though large meadows will largely break these up. The lower elevation areas to the north are largely comprised of large open faces with gentle grades and big open basins. Here vegetation is fairly sparse and excellent glassing conditions can be found.
The higher elevations areas throughout this unit will see a heavy presence of pine, lodgepole, and fir. These trees will grow in large mature stands which can severely cut down on visibility and mobility. The mid elevation areas will see much of the same but large meadows of sage and grass will greatly disperse the tree cover. The lower elevations will be comprised of large expanses of sage and native grasses with scattered patches of pinyon juniper and pines.
This area is largely public but the important thing to keep in mind is that elk will be primarily found on the northern end of the unit during this hunt. In this area a few large parcels of private will be encountered and hunters may need to skirt the edges of these areas. Plenty of roads and trails can be found here making access pretty straightforward for anyone. Physically traversing these lower elevation areas will be easy for the most part.
There are no modern lodging options found in this unit and hunters will either need to RV or truck camp. Groceries and sporting goods will need to be purchased prior to the hunt beginning.
