On The Ground

With only a few high ranges capable of supporting big game, this desert unit on the north and eastern shores of Lake Mead holds desert bighorn sheep and a low number of mule deer. Animals are isolated to higher land, where environmental conditions are bearable and water is available.

Mule deer numbers are low. The arid landscape makes for tough hunting. Lots of jagged cliffs and sandstone ridges, makes for a high quality sheep hunt in remote areas.

Terrain

Due to extreme conditions on the desert floor, big game animals seek refuge at high elevations. Deer live on both major mountain ranges. Sheep hunters should concentrate on the mountains bordering Lake Mead where remote canyons are difficult to access by foot.

  • Roughly 800 square miles

  • 92.6% public land

  • Elevations ranging from about 1,700-8,000 feet

Creosote bushes and various cacti grow at low elevations. Sagebrush and pinyon-juniper woodland grow at higher elevations.

Public access is good on roads that reach the bases of mountain ranges. No trail systems exist. Some sheep are deep in remote terrain, where hiking is difficult. Some hunters use boats to reach remote locations along Lake Mead.

  • Sandy and washboard roads can be hard on full-size vehicles

  • Equip your vehicle with sturdy tires

  • Flash floods can wash out roads and camps

  • Expect to hike a great deal

Motels, RV parks and other services are available in Mesquite and Logandale. Hunters may camp on the desert floor, but temperatures can reach 120 degrees in summer and early fall, and vegetation offers no shade. Lake Mead Recreation Area has campsites, but tent camping is not recommended because theft and vandalism are common.
