On The Ground

This hunt district is located in south central Montana and is southwest of Billings and south of Columbus along the Yellowstone River. The Crow Indian Reservation provides the eastern boundary and the Wyoming, Montana state line makes up the southern boundary. Antelope are typically found on private land, so try to get permission to access these areas.

Antelope numbers are down in this district from historic levels. It will take some time for this unit to recover, but the numbers are stable and increasing. There is a respectable buck to doe ratio. The general tag is for either sex antelope. There are additional doe and fawn antelope B tags that can be applied for.

Terrain

Most of this area is broken with numerous coulees, small ridges and benches. The Yellowstone River valley and the Clarks Fork River valley are dominated with irrigated fields. Foothills located in the east lead to the Pryor Mountains, and foothills in the south lead to the Beartooths.

  • Roughly 1,608 square miles

  • 21.6% public land

  • Elevations from 3,000-5,500 feet

Grassland or farmland cover much of the district and the Yellowstone and Clark Fork Rivers have irrigated fields all along them. The breaks are covered with patches of pine, cedar and juniper. Sagebrush is found on much of the rangeland. Dry land farming can be found throughout the district.

This unit is accessable using several highways and county gravel roads. The majority of the antelope reside on private land and access to the private land is difficult, but with some time invested permission can be obtained. State sections are scattered through the unit, along with ranches in the Block Management program.

Billings has several motels, restaurants, gas stations and sporting goods stores. Columbus, Red Lodge and Bridger have gas, food and motels. Camping is allowed in several campgrounds along the Yellowstone River, and Cooney Reservoir has numberous campgrounds around it.
