North of Ogden and south of Hyrum in the rugged Wasatch Range, this unit offers great access but mountain goat densities have dipped in recent years. Some goats are isolated but others are within shooting range of four-wheel-drive roads.
Mountain goat densities and overall populations have dropped in this unit in recent years and because of this tag numbers have taken a hit. Hunters can still find great hunting possibilities but initially locating target animals will come with a greater challenge.
Most of the terrain is steep and rugged. Some of the canyons have a maintained hiking or horseback trail that runs up the bottom giving hunters access to the high elevations. There are a number of trailheads that start at high elevations, helping with the amount of elevation a hunter will need to cover to access prime goat areas.
Unique to this unit the mountain goats are isolated to a small part of the unit. The primary mountain goat habitat runs from Willard Peak to Ben Lomond Peak. This is a very popular recreational hiking area and hikers frequent these peaks year round. Both these peaks are very rugged and steep and hunters will need to be prepared to hike in rugged country.
The high elevations contain dense Engelmann spruce. This unit has some alpine tundra found at the high elevations areas and particularly around the high peaks. Middle elevations have Douglas fir, aspens, grass meadows and sagebrush, while low elevations have pinyon/juniper, sagebrush, oak brush, grasses and other browse. Water is scattered throughout the unit with springs, small lakes and perennial streams.
There are some well-maintained roads that a hunter can use to access the high elevation parts of this unit. The most popular road is Willard Peak. This road is accessed from Mantua. Some goats can be viewed from the Willard Peak road. There are some very well maintained hiking trails that run from Willard Peak to Ben Lomond Peak. Hunters have had good success using the trail system around both Willard Peak and Ben Lomond Peak.
Ogden, Brigham City, and Mantua are just a few areas that have lodging, gas, groceries and other supplies. There are multiple campgrounds located around the mountain goat habitat that hunters can use.
