We just added another powerful feature to Insider that will greatly benefit you in finding additional hunting opportunities across the West. Let’s face it… everyone hunts over-the-counter (OTC) units and it can be very difficult to find the best place to hunt. Now it’s even easier to find the perfect OTC unit to hunt. For the first time ever you can see and compare OTC hunts by harvest success.
The best way to become a better hunter is to hunt more and the easiest way to do that is to go on OTC hunts. These hunts can be done each year, and if you're like most of us, that's not a bad thing at all. I typically like to bank on hunting certain OTC units each year. Hunting the same OTC unit year after year allows me to hone in on the best hunting spot in that unit. After a few years of hunting the same OTC unit, you pretty much know the best areas to concentrate on.
Since we have added OTC harvest success, hunters have a huge advantage in trying to find the best OTC unit or even narrow down several OTC units by trophy potential, male to female ratios and now harvest success. This allows you to pick the best unit based on your prefered hunting criteria. This new tool even has me looking at scouting new units for this fall... scouting just got a lot easier!
Only the states that have true OTC hunts will have this filter. So this does not include leftover tag units because those are covered in the normal filter. The states where you can now filter by OTC harvest success are: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho and Utah.
The new filter provides more research data for OTC archery mule deer and Coues deer hunts. With a lot of the season dates in Arizona set up later than your typical archery season, this is the perfect state to expand your hunting season. You will see a huge benefit using the OTC Harvest Success filter for Arizona when you are fine tuning what unit to hunt. The harvest success data is shared among all three season dates for a particular unit.
You can easily filter this information by all OTC hunts for a certain species. Clicking the links below will take you directly to the OTC harvest success filter for that species on Filtering 2.0.
Note: Harvest success in Arizona includes any available OTC hunts in a unit. Arizona Game and Fish Department does not separate data for multiple dates.
The new OTC harvest success filter provides more research data for antelope and elk hunts in Colorado. You can easily filter this information by all OTC hunts for a certain species or by each weapon type. Clicking the links below will take you directly to the OTC harvest success filter for that weapon type on Filtering 2.0.
The new OTC harvest success filter provides more research data for elk, mule deer and whitetail hunts in Idaho.
You can easily filter this information by all OTC hunts for a certain species or by each weapon type. Clicking the links below will take you directly to the OTC harvest success filter for that weapon type on Filtering 2.0.
For Utah, the new OTC harvest success filter provides more research data for the limited number of OTC elk hunts. You can easily filter this information by all OTC hunts for a certain weapon type. Clicking the links below will take you directly to the OTC harvest success filter for that weapon type on Filtering 2.0.
Accessing the OTC harvest success information on Filtering is exactly the same as other filters.
We have two new graphs available on each of the unit profiles that has OTC harvest success data. Each of these graphs are available under the “Species within this Unit” section.
If you're unfamiliar with the amount of hunting research tools that are available to you with GOHUNT's INSIDER, you can read more below.
