- Hunting conditions generally improve as the season progresses
- Quality optics will be important for the hunt
- Wilderness area present within the unit
This unit is located in the northwestern portion of the state, north of Jackson. This unit is bordered by two National Parks, Yellowstone to the north and Teton National Park to the west. A large portion of this unit is also designated Wilderness Area. There is only a narrow strip of national forest, about a mile and a half wide and 20 miles long, that runs along State Highway 287/26. Unless hunting with a guide, nonresidents will want to pay very close attention to the wilderness boundaries.
A good density of wolves will be found here but packs can still be notoriously difficult to locate. This is large and, at times, very open country. Optics will be very important. Nonresident hunters will want to pay close attention to wilderness boundaries.
This unit is very mountainous and consists of classic Wyoming mountain terrain. This area is north of State Highway 287/26, running from Dubois to Moran Junction, known as Togwotee Pass. In contrast to the surrounding mountains, the mountains in this unit peak out at around 10,000 feet and are generally not quite as rugged as those found in surrounding areas.
The mountains in this unit are your typical timber covered ridges with open meadows scattered throughout. Once above timberline, you are going to find what you would typically think of in an alpine environment -big basins with bald rocky mountain peaks. Like all mountains in Wyoming, you will find lodgepole pines, white pines, juniper and aspen trees throughout the range.
This area is largely public land but does contain a lot of designated wilderness. Nonresident hunters will need to pay attention to this if not hunting with a guide or sponsoring resident. Overall, in this area if hunters can see it they can generally hunt it. Cross country travel can be a chore in most places but trails are available to help hunters access deep areas.
If you decide to hunt this unit, you are limited to two towns for all of your supplies. If you are hunting the far eastern portion of the unit, Dubious will probably be your best option. Everywhere else, Jackson is going to be the best choice. Because of the distance you have to travel to these towns, it’s highly recommended that you bring all of your supplies with you. As for lodging and camping, there are quite a few options. On the pass there are two main lodges, Hatchet Resort and Togwotee Mountain Lodge. There are three established campgrounds along State Highway 287/26. If you are willing to travel further, there are more campgrounds closer to Dubois and Jackson.
